Conference on May 24, 2026

The working conference to initiate the Capitalism Can’t be Fixed movement was successfully held at the Workers’ Action Centre in Toronto on Sunday, May 24th. Over 350 activists, 100+ in person and nearly 250 virtually, joined in discussions, gave feedback and heard from speakers, and concluded on concrete next steps for the organization to take to build a fighting socialist movement.

Capitalism Can’t be Fixed (CCBF) promotes the development of a broad, united movement for fundamental societal change. It began as a campaign to bring a 40-page socialist policy platform to members of the New Democratic Party (NDP) and run an explicitly socialist and anti-imperialist leadership candidate in the 2026 NDP leadership race. It thus challenged social democratic ideology, exposed its core alignment with and support for capitalism and imperialist aggression and plunder and its basic hostility to socialist ideologies and practices.

The conference opened with an assessment of the current political moment and heard perspectives from five guest speakers about their regional situations, popular struggles and methods of activism, as well as their views on what the movement for socialism should do next. The first workshop breakout session had activists brainstorm the best ways to reach more people and encourage them to join this new movement.

A second panel in the afternoon shared their perspective on the best pathways forward, including the problems, contradictions and opportunities in building a socialist future. The second workshop breakout session was focused on a working document for unity and possible political actions for CCBF to pursue in the next three months.

At the end of the conference, CCBF launched a monthly sustainers campaign to sustain the movement and hire a part-time coordinator for actions such as establishing regional CCBF chapters and organizing a Carnival Against Capitalism in September. Activists completed the event by joining working committees on outreach, fundraising, major event planning, education, and actions or campaigns. The conference was a success and participants left united, motivated and ready to work. A socialist prospect is a healthy development in Canadian politics that can shed light on reality and root causes of the peoples’ problems, giving hope and building momentum to create a new path forward. Instead of disintegrating social services, lack of basic necessities and shrinking democratic space where inequality and militarization grow, participants are united in their fight for a future Canada which values labour, protects the environment and stands in solidarity with workers everywhere.
